Michigan to Take Part in Inaugural Puerto Rico Challenge

The University of Michigan baseball team will play in the inaugural Puerto Rico Challenge, it was announced Thursday (Jan. 4). In addition to the Wolverines, the tournament will feature seven other college teams from Feb. 13-16, 2025.
"The Puerto Rico Challenge will be transformative for our team, enhancing both our athletic participation and cultural appreciation," said head coach Tracy Smith. "The University of Michigan extends our sincere gratitude to everyone involved in putting this event together in what we anticipate to be an unforgettable experience that transcends the game of baseball."
Joining Michigan in the tournament will be Connecticut, Missouri, Penn State, Rice, Stetson, Villanova and Virginia with the schedule to be announced at a later date. The series will be played in two stadiums across the island, one in Ponce and one in Mayagüez. While on the island, there will be baseball clinics for grammar school children led by the participating teams' coaches and players.
The Wolverines will open the 2024 season on Feb. 16 against Western Michigan at Camelback Ranch in Glendale, Ariz.
